TLUSA Northeast Friendly Camps

One of our fifteen TLUSA Core Values
Here are some recommendations for short or long-term
camping facilities from local northeast Trailmen

Outdoor-Focused -- We believe there is something special about being in the outdoors. This enables our program to instill “Adventure, Character, and Leadership” traits in boys and young men.  Camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities help build deep relationships and provide a special context for leadership, problem solving, conflict resolution, and character building.  We also value the outdoor focus of our program as a unique means of helping a boy see and appreciate the wonder, majesty, and grandness of God as reflected in His creation.

Please inform your Area Team or Point Man of camps you'd like to personally recommend here, or share a few candid snapshots for the From the Fields & Trails blog page.

  • Please let troops know that Cove Valley is a resource to consider for a weekend, a service day or a week-long summer adventure.
  • We just completed our Adventurer Summer Adventure at Cove Valley Christian Youth Camp.
  • The boys took part in many activities in a good high adventure realm.
  • They swam, with many completing the 200 yard swim and one getting the swim test done, against all odds and with tons of personal perseverance.
  • They removed 500’ of large rocks (several tons worth) and mulched a trail
  • They did a 7 mile day hike on the AT with at least a 1000’ elevation gain.
  • They backpacked overnight on the Tuscarora Trail on an incredibly tough trail with lots of boulder field and bramble fields. (Note-Next time, bring a machete)
  • They slept in an Adirondack shelter on the trail and hike back into camp. The shelter is about 2 miles from camp up on the ridge.
  • All boys slept under the stars for a night. Several did every night.
  • They spent an afternoon on the lake with some watercraft.
  • They had a Holey Canoe Race
  • They improved their team dynamics on the low challenge course.
  • They overcame personal fears on the high ropes challenge course.
  • They ran a great camp, highly organized, the only forgotten item was a couple easily replaceable food items forgotten by an adult leader.
  • The facility up on the meadow was perfect for any troop. The price was great and Allen and Paul went out of their way to make it a great experience for us.
  • One of Dave Servin’s things is to talk about how many Christian camps are out on the fruited plain. Cove Valley has epitomized this.
  • Besides the Tuscarora, the AT is nearby. Whitewater rafting and canoeing are within an hours drive. I’m sure there are other things too.

This road trip includes the major waterfalls in the Old Line State! That’s right – eight waterfalls in seven locations. Most require a quick trail hike, so make sure to dress appropriate for the journey. Driving time is 6 hours, 10 minutes, and that doesn’t include exploring each location, so you may want to consider making this a weekend or multi-day trip.

From Frank Amato - a soon to be Area Team Member for TLUSA Laurel Highlands, PA.
I've gone to Camp Christian several times for weekend retreats and have had wonderful experiences. It's 15 minutes from Frank Lloyd Wright's "Falling Water" surrounded by the beautiful Kentuck wilderness.
Located just 60 miles from Pittsburgh, their retreat center is conveniently located near Fallingwater, the Great Allegheny Passage, Seven Springs Mountain Resort, Ohiopyle and other great Laurel Highlands attractions.

Ohiopyle is a great training trail for big mountains and tough terrain -- Definitely a 'man' maker!

From Kent Marks, TLUSA MidWest Regional Team Leader -- It was about 10 years ago when I backpacked the trail but what I do remember is a very tight trail along the ridge of the Youghegheny River canyon and then dropping down 400 feet to a beautiful camping area at the base of two mountains. The smart ones will reserve an Adirondack with the park system way in advance. The Adirondacks are in a beautiful setting and well worth the money for rental. The next morning found us ascending 700' to the ridge top of another mountain which then took us into a hemlock forest and bubbling brook streams. If I remember correctly, the distance was about 12 miles, a perfect one nighter backpack training session with rugged terrain and beautiful vistas. Definitely a 'man' maker!
